About Foundation Studies

Preparing a strong base for progression

At Oxford and Cherwell Valley College Foundation Studies cover a broad and diverse curriculum to facilitate a wide range of students with differing learning needs.

Pre Entry Learning (Oxford)
The Pre Entry course is designed for students aged 16-19 with profound and complex learning difficulties for up to three years. The course offers an individualised programme which may include opportunities for students to learn and practice early stages of communication and interaction within their environment through the principles of Intensive Interaction and a multi-sensory environment. Some students will have the opportunity (where appropriate) to develop and practice the early stages of independence living and personal skills. All student programmes are underpinned by literacy, numeracy, IT and personal skills. The course provides a high degree of support, together with a substantial element of personal care provision.

Part Time and Full Time Foundation Learning (Oxford and Banbury)
We run courses for adults with learning difficulties and /or disabilities ranging from profound and complex to moderate needs. These courses help to facilitate the development of independence and life skills. Additionally students have the opportunity to gather qualifications at appropriate levels of ability. Where appropriate students have the opportunity to learn about work, for work and through work. All courses are designed to enhance basic skills and personal and social skills. The course is enriched with opportunities for trips and residential.
Within the part-time programme OCVC includes 10-week courses focusing on delivering work skills to a range of learners who aren't in full-time education.(Banbury)

Foundation Studies for Autistic Learners (Blackbird Leys)
The focus of this course is to enable the learner to make positive choices and gain independence.
This course also enables the student to take a variety of appropriate qualifications at differing levels. The course addresses social undertsanding, communication and flexibility of thought. Each student follows an individual programme and will particpate in qualifications from Entry level to Level two enhancing vocational skills, basic skills and employabilty skills.

New Directions Entry Level (Oxford and Banbury)
The New Directions course is designed for students who may not have achieved their full potential at school, are undecided about which direction to take and who don't have the required qualifications to study at Level 1. This is a flexible course which can be studied full time alongside a part time job. This is a vocational course with upskilling in literacy, numeracy and IT and a focus on the development of personal and social skills. The course will enhance students employability skills.

Level One Learning (Oxford and Banbury)
All of our courses offer a fresh approach to vocational learning and a new opportunity for students to develop academic and personal skills whilst increasing their levels of confidence and competency in preparation for the working world or progression onto level two. This is a flexible course which can be studied full-time alongside a part time job where appropriate. Level One currently offer learning opportunities in Catering, Motor Vehicle, Art and Media, Performing Arts, Health and Social Care, Public Services, Hair and Beauty, Contruction, IT at work and Business. Students study in their vocational choice one day a week and continue to up skill in Literacy, Numeracy , IT and personal and social skills on the remaining two days. Students may progress onto Level 2 or leave college with a selection of qualifications recognsied by employers.

Entry to Employment (Oxford and Banbury)
Entry to Employment is a programme for young people aged 16 - 18 who are not yet ready or able to enter employment. There are no specific entry requirements for this programme although young people must have the approval of their Connexions Personal Adviser to confirm that this programme would benefit them.
The Programme is designed to help young people move onto a positive destination - employment,an apprectriceship programme or a full-time college course. Students can undertake a level one voctional subject and also develop skills in Communication, Application of Number and IT
