About Technology

The fusion of skill and knowledge

At Oxford and Cherwell Valley College, the area of Technology covers two subjects: construction and engineering. It is split into the following vocational sections, which are covered on four campuses:

• Trowel Occupations
• Decorative Occupations
• Electrical Installation
• Plumbing & Gas Technology
• Wood Occupations
• Built Environment
• Performance Engineering-Motorsports
• Motor Vehicle
• Engineering-Oxford

The College is part of three centres of Vocational Excellence in the following areas:

• Construction “Building Services and Wood Trades” – incorporating Heritage Skills
• Engineering “Motor-sports”
• Engineering “Lean Manufacture”

Technology

OCVC has strong employer engagement in these sectors and the Technology department is continuing to build relationships by working in close harmony with the employer engagement department, Sector Skills Councils and the Learning Skills Council.

The department has demonstrated a growth in the provision for 14 – 16 year olds, exhibiting a passion for increasing quality and attracting greater interest from this age group.

There is a wide selection of courses provided within the Technology department, with courses ranging from L1 new directions, through to L4 NVQ, HNC and development work on Foundation Degrees. There are also specific employer-designed courses ranging from L2, Health and Safety to one-week courses in high technologies for the Motor-sports Industry.

The department prides itself on its existing links with employers and is working diligently to improve the existing arrangements. Such links already exist with

• Pro –drive
• Knowles & son
• Kingerlee
• BMW
• Symm & Co
• Williams F1
• Komatsu
• Warburton’s

The department is also represented at various levels with the following associations:

• National Motor-sports College
• Automotive Academy
• Charted Institute of Building
• Oxford Construction Curriculum Centre
• Oxfordshire Construction Training Group
• LSC Engineering Sector Focus Group
• Construction Sector Focus Group
• British Association for Construction Heads

Our newly-formed management team is currently focusing on the weaknesses raised from inspection and counts the pursuit of excellence as the foundation of its vision.

The shared goal is for Technology at OCVC to become the first choice for learners, employers and parents in Engineering and Construction training.
