A group of students on the New Directions Level One programme on the Banbury Campus have been rallying the local community to help raise money for an organisation that installs water pumps in South Africa.

‘Playpumps’ install a range of innovative, sustainable water pumps powered by children playing. Set up near schools in rural parts of the country, the Playpump system doubles as a water pump and a roundabout for children.

The group of students decided that they would like to make a difference when they learned that more than one billion people worldwide do not have access to clean drinking water, leading to the death of a child every 15 seconds*

Working with over 30 local businesses to develop a range of fundraising activities, including a raffle, bag packing at local supermarkets and even a 7 hour sponsored water carry, the students have raised an astonishing £3000.

This money will go towards the building of a Playpump in an area afflicted by the poor access to clean and safe drinking water.
